Finding Beauty in the Process

finding beauty in the process

A few days ago I was sitting with God and He reminded me of the importance of a thankful heart. When things don’t go my way, more times than not I focus on that and I start missing all of the other things in my life that God has blessed me with. It can get so bad that I no longer even see Him. Many times while going through testing and trials I tend to focus more on how bad it sucks and I miss out on the process and where God is taking me through that.

Take a flower for example. A flower doesn’t just immediately become a beautiful flower, it has to have roots, it has to go through dirt, and a process of growing. If it wasn’t for the process, the flower would not be a flower.

“A flower has to go through a lot of dirt before it can bloom.”

The same goes for us, if it wasn’t for the testing, trials, and growth process we wouldn’t be who we are. The things we go through in life God uses to mold, shape, and refine us. We have the choice to focus on how bad it stinks or we can choose to see the beauty in the very process that makes us beautiful and is forming our character. We can also choose to thank God. Whether we are happy, hurting, angry, sick, etc. we have the choice to be thankful. Someone shared this truth with me several months ago: “what you focus on you empower.” I don’t know about you but I definitely don’t want to empower the crap in my life! I would much rather empower Jesus, the Author of my life.

I encourage you to see what it is you are empowering in this season. Ask God to help you cultivate a thankful heart and take your own steps towards gratitude by thanking Him even if gratitude is the last thing you are feeling today. Here are some verses and quotes that inspire me and encourage truth in my life.

  • “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”
  •  “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” 2 Corinthians 4:17
  •  “Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-7
  •  “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4
  •  “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
